Photinia is a member of the Rose family with around 60 species of small trees and large shrubs
The most popular species of Photinia are Photinia ‘Red Robin’, Photinia ‘little Red Robin’, Photinia ‘Louise’, Photinia ‘Pink Marble’, Photinia ‘Pink Crispy’ and Photinia ‘compacta’. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is one of the most popular and flexible plants sold in the UK today.
Photinia is sold as a small tree, a pleached tree, a half standard and as a large bush up to 3 meters in height.
A very fast growing, dense eveergreen plant, Red Robin is also known as ‘red tip Photinia’, is easy to grow and quick to establish in your garden. New bright red leaves appear in the Spring before darkening and turning a gloss green colour throughout the summer. At the Tree Nursery, based in Essex, we value Photinia as a screening plant, it’s evergreen and can be planted in very tight spaces relatively close to property.
Photinia will withstand temperatures down to -10c and will grow to a mature height and width of 4 and 2 meters respectively. We also clip Photinia into a range of topiary – balls, pom poms, 1/4 standards, 1/2 standards, cloud pruned and everything inbetween. As a bush – Photinia will also make a solid and stunning hedge at 1m spacings. It will not mind being clipped back with a hedge cutter, in fact it will be reinvigorated to produce new buds holding rich, bright red leaves.
Photinia will tolerate most soils that are free-draining, but will not tolerate wet conditions.Irrigationn throughout the first growing season is most important. After that, the plants will look after themselves.
