Parrotia persica – Persian ironwood tree 8-10cm girth

Parrotia persica is a medium-sized, deciduous tree with a spreading, irregular, branching habit. It has grey bark that flakes and becomes mottled with age and an abundance of small crimson flowers that appear late winter and early spring on bare twigs. These flowers are followed by large, glossy, oval leaves which emerge as green in the spring, turning to autumnal shades of yellow, crimson and purple in autumn before they fall. Reaching a mature height of 6-8m and growing well in moist, well-draining soils in full sun to partial shade, the superb Persian ironwood tree is often planted as a specimen or screen in gardens, a popular choice owing to the regular seasonal interest.
