Malus domestica ‘Granny Smith’ – Granny Smith Apple (Bareroot) 6-8cm girth

Malus domestica ‘Granny Smith’ is a medium-sized, deciduous apple tree with green leaves and white flowers, tinted pink, that emerge in the spring. The fruits of this tree appear in the autumn, these green eating apples have a recognisable sharp taste and tangy acidity. These apples are one of the best varieties for storing, and once harvested, the fruit can sometimes be kept until May. This tree is a partially self-fertile apple and should not need a pollinating partner to produce fruit, please note that it can be cross pollinated with pollination groups 2, 3 and 4 for a larger crop. Granny Smith is grown on a MM106 rootstock to produce a strong tree that will reach a mature height of 5-6m and a mature spread of 4-5m.

If you don’t intend to plant a bare root tree immediately upon arrival, store the tree in a cool, frost free shed or garage. It is important to ensure the roots are not exposed to the sun or drying winds between lifting in the nursery and planting on site. Great care should be taken to ensure the tree is heeled in tight to obtain good root/soil contact. The tree should also be staked to provide stability.

Bare root fruit trees are available to buy from November to March each year whilst the trees are dormant.
