Ginkgo biloba – Maidenhair tree 8-10cm girth

Ginkgo biloba is a large, deciduous tree with an upright, conical habit which spreads and becomes irregular when fully mature. It has a greyish brown bark that becomes deeply cracked with age and unique fan-shaped, two-lobed leaves that emerge as a fresh green in spring and turn to a stunning golden-yellow in autumn. The Maidenhair tree is dioecious, which means that it is either male or female; this can not be determined until the tree is 25-30 years old as this is the point in which the tree will begin to flower and produce fruit. Once flowers finally emerge, they appear unremarkable, on male trees they appear as short green catkins, and on female trees, they appear as small, green stalks which are then pollinated by the wind, yellow fruits on the female trees will then appear in autumn. The Ginkgo is a very unusual, ancient genus with fossils being found that date back 270 million years to the time of the dinosaurs. Originally from China, it has been cultivated for many years in temple gardens and as a specimen tree where it represents longevity and endurance, some trees are believed to be 1000 years old.
