Planting Trees – Don’t dig too deep

As we once again approach the tree planting season, it is worth revisiting some important points when planting trees.

A common problem is planting too deep. We are all concerned that the roots are well covered with soil when we have finished planting, but this often leads to a bigger problem. Planting too deep is as detrimental to the tree as planting too shallow.

On every tree after lifting there will be a nursery soil mark on the stem of the tree. It is most important not to plant below this mark, as doing so will deny the tree oxygen and may lead to further sinking as the ground settles. Make sure the tree pit is wide enough to accommodate the root structure with room to allow expansion of the rootplate. By following this simple but important advice, you are sure to obtain successful establishment.
