Flowering Japanese Maples and flowering Cherry trees

Around this time of year, we are keenly anticipating the swelling buds of the flowering Japanese Maples.

Nothing confirms the arrival of Spring like the magnificent blaze of color these trees always provide.

Red Maple tree
Acer palmatum Bloodgood – Japanese Maple tree

A beautiful Acer with deep reddish-purple leaves through spring and summer which fade to reds and bronze in autumn The leaves are palmate with 5 to 7 slender pointed lobes. Small purple flowers are followed by red-winged fruits. Will grow into a small tree and can be happily kept in a large pot. One of the best purple-leaved Japanese Maples.

There are many different types of flowering cherry trees from pink to double pink to white, either with a tight upright crown or a more wide, spreading structure. The Great White Cherry (Prunus serrula Tai Haku) is the most valued of the white flowering types. As with most flowering cherry trees it will grow in a variety of soils, but will not tolerate waterlogging.

Prunus Accolade is a particular favourite of ours with its smallish crown, its double pink flowers and autumn colour it is a superb tree for a small garden. Prunus Kanzan will grow rather larger and is perhaps the most widely planted and prolific double pink flowering cherry. A rather good smallish flowering cherry with a weeping habit is Prunus Kikushidare with large flowers and early display.

Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis should never be omitted from your list. This winter flowering cherry goes on and on during the bleak winter months and is a useful addition to any garden.
