Purple Beech – Complete Hedging Pack – 25m

Fagus sylvatica purpurea is a deciduous plant with beautiful, glossy, deep purple leaves which turn to copper in autumn. Although Beech is considered deciduous, the brown foliage will hold through winter until new leaf buds appear to provide year-round screening and coverage. Often planted to form a stunning, solid hedge, this low maintenance plant should be trimmed back in summer in order to in order to thicken the foliage (the older and denser the purple beech, the more leaves retained through the winter).

Our Complete Hedging Pack contains the plants, 60cm tall rabbit spiral guards and 90cm tall bamboo canes to plant 25m of beech hedging. We calculate this based on 5 plants being used per metre in a double staggered row, with a rabbit spiral guard and bamboo cane for each plant.

Bare Root plants are available from early November to late March. We can take Pre-orders before this time and dispatch the plants as soon as they are available.

How to plant your Bare Root hedging pack

1 – If you don’t intend to set the hedge immediately upon arrival, store the plants in a cool, frost free shed or garage.

2 – When planting out, do not remove the hedging plants from the box or bag. Exposure to sun or drying winds may lead to root desiccation and eventual failure.

3 – Do not dig huge planting pits that require laborious backfilling. If the soil is reasonably good, use the notch planting technique. Push your spade 4-6” into the ground, open up a wide slit and place the root in at the nursery soil mark.

4 – Be sure to ‘heel in’ very tight. This is most important to ensure good root/soil contact. After heeling in, you should have to tug the plant quite hard to remove it.

5 – After completion of planting, mulch the hedge with either; plastic, woodchips or similar to trap moisture in, and prevent growth of weed competition.
