Hornbeam – Complete Hedging Pack 5m

Carpinus betulus is a fast-growing, deciduous tree with a grey bark that develops ridges with age. It has bright green, ovate leaves that turn to orange/brown in the autumn, catkins that open in spring and clusters of green, winged fruits in autumn (although the hornbeam is deciduous, it will hang onto its leaves long into the winter). Reaching a mature height of 25m, the native Hornbeam will grow well in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-draining soils, thriving on clay. One of the most important trees in the British Isles, Carpinus betulus is often planted as a specimen tree or used to create structure and screening, in larger gardens, open areas or woodland. The hornbeam also copes well with trimming, this means that it can be clipped to form a spectacular dense hedge. Awards: RHS AGM (Award Garden Merit).

This hedging pack contains 25 plants for 5m of hedging, we calculate this based on 5 plants being used per metre in a single staggered row.

Bare Root plants are available from early November to late March. We can take Pre-orders before this time and dispatch the plants as soon as they are available.

Check for and remove any dead, decaying, diseased or crossing branches.

Remove any weeds from around the base of the Hornbeam tree (including grass).

How to plant your Bare Root hedging pack

1 – If you don’t intend to set the hedge immediately upon arrival, store the plants in a cool, frost free shed or garage.

2 – When planting out, do not remove the hedging plants from the box or bag. Exposure to sun or drying winds may lead to root desiccation and eventual failure.

3 – Do not dig huge planting pits that require laborious backfilling. If the soil is reasonably good, use the notch planting technique. Push your spade 4-6” into the ground, open up a wide slit and place the root in at the nursery soil mark.

4 – Be sure to ‘heel in’ very tight. This is most important to ensure good root/soil contact. After heeling in, you should have to tug the plant quite hard to remove it.

5 – After completion of planting, mulch the hedge with either; plastic, woodchips or similar to trap moisture in, and prevent growth of weed competition.
