Liquidambar styraciflua (Sweet Gum)

Buy Liquidambar styraciflua trees or Sweetgum tree varieties for truly great year round interest. The seasonal interest starts with the Maple like lobed leaves which emerge green in Spring. In Autumn they turn to dazzling reds mixed with yellows, oranges and even purples. These truly have some of the best autumn colours of the trees we supply and are always offered when autumn interest is required.

The bark becomes grooved or fissured as the tree matures resembling cork on some cases. They are a medium sized tree reaching 10-15m tall when mature in most areas but have an upright conical habit so will fit comfortably in most medium and large gardens.

Liquidambar styraciflua will grow happily in moist, fertile soil as long as the drainage is good, ideally a sunny sheltered site but this is not essential. This sweet gum tree has a broad maple shape leaf with 5 to 7 lobes and very corky bark

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘ Worplesdon’  is very similar but the leaf has deeper cut lobes meaning it is more star like in appearance. The bark tends to be smoother and in some cases have deeper colours in the Autumn.

Buy both liquidambar trees for most situations, giving good coverage when in leaf and amazing Autumn interest, a great addition to any planting scheme.
