Hop Hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia)


Ostrya carpinifolia or Hop Hornbeam is a large deciduous tree which has a wide and spreading crown when mature making an impressive tree.

The green, oval leaves are serrated around the edge and resemble hornbeam, these turn to yellow in the autumn before falling..

A great spectacle in spring when masses of catkins appear which are followed later in the year by creamy white hanging ‘Hop like’ fruits giving its common name of Hop Hornbeam.

A tough tree which will grow in all soils and conditions to a mature height around 15m tall.

A tree with much year round interest  for larger gardens.
