The native Hawthorn, Crataegus Monogyna is one of the main constituents of our native hedgerows throughout the UK. Planted as a single species, double row hedge it will create am impenetrable stock proof hedge. As time has progressed, several different cultivars have appeared, grown on as standard trees for amenity use. However, even the straight Crataegus Monogyna can be grown into a standard tree of around 12’ tall. The tree rewards us with its rather flat, pure white flower in the spring; and a profusion of red berries later on in summer. Hawthorn will grow in any well drained soil, in partial shade or full sun.

Crataegus “Pauls Scarlet” is by far one of the most popular trees, also a small tree “Pauls Scarlet” has bright red flowers and glossy leaves. A most reliable tree, it is widely planted in streets and parks.

Crataegus does suffer from mildew in the nursery, but once out in the wider environment with greater airflow this usually disappears. Also prone to suckering, lower pruning around the base is the answer. Standard trees can be bought from the nursery at 8-10, 10-12 and 12-14cm girths.
