Bamboo Trees and Hedge (Phyllostachys)
Buy Bamboo plants (Phyllostachys) for a fast growing evergreen plant with tall, cane like stems full of lush green foliage all year round. The habit of the growth becoming more open towards the top makes it an ideal plant to create evergreen screening and privacy without the problem of completely cutting out light and creating heavy shade.
We offer varieties all from the Phyllostachys genus which are all tough and hardy clump forming types in the UK climate making them easy to grow in most gardens. These Bamboo will grow in most places as long as there is moist soil but will flourish if the site is sunny and sheltered especially from cold winter winds. Although Phyllostachys varieties spread, like all bamboo, from their roots underground they are known as a clump forming type in our cooler climate and will only slowly spread with age in each direction. If the growth needs to be controlled, to form a hedge or along a boundary for instance, a root barrier can easily be added to the ground to direct the root growth where it is wanted.
Phyllostachys Aurea (Golden Bamboo)
This is one of the toughest and easiest to grow bamboo, establishing quickly to grow into a large, bushy plant. They will reach heights up to 4m in most situations and sometimes taller in an ideal spot. Golden bamboo stems and leaves both emerge mid to light green and if there is sufficient sun and light the stems will turn to a golden yellow with age, giving the plant its common name. The lower growth can be removed from the mature stems to reveal their full colour and increase the effect of the golden stems. The new canes will emerge from the ground as soon as the soil and cooler nights have warmed up in late spring early summer. This new growth is surprisingly fast and has notable growth each day. This is an ideal candidate for hedges and screening but also makes a lovely specimen plant when grown alone. Bamboo can be grown in the ground or is happy in a container if fed and watered regularly.
Phyllostachys Nigra (Black Bamboo)
This is a very popular form chosen for the dark stems which are usually cleared of leaves for maximum impact. Black Bamboo is slower growing and less hardy than the other varieties but will thrive if given moist soil and a sunny sheltered site. The stems emerge dark green and age quickly to dark brown and if there is enough sunlight turn to a shiny black. A very decorative bamboo Phyllostachys nigra will grow to around 3-3.5m tall in most sites forming a dense clump. Some scorching and browning of the leaves may occur in very cold and icy winds but
it will re-grow come spring.
Phyllostacys Bamboo are great plants for screening and year round evergreen cover and will work well in a border or grown as a hedge on a boundary they can also be grown in a container if regularly fed and watered.
