This subject often mystifies people where pollination, flowering, and pruning are concerned. However, the truth is quite straightforward. Some apples are self-fertile but moat will require cross-pollination from other types. Hence the classification into four flowering groups; A for early flowering, B for Midseason, C for mid/late flowering and D for the later flowering types.

In urban areas, there is usually no need to worry as there are usually plenty of other types in each group from surrounding gardens to provide cross-pollination. In isolated areas it is best to have another tree from the same pollinating group or one from either side to ensure good fruiting. View our range of fruit trees here.

Apple discovery and Bramley Apple trees.
Malus domestica – Bramley’s Apple and Malus domestica Discovery – Discovery Apple.

At King and Co, we tend to supply old English varieties as this is what our customers ask for. Cox, James Grieve, Discovery and Laxtons superb are amongst the favourites. What about Pears? Once again these are divided into three flowering groups, with Conference being the tree of choice. The same for Plums where Victoria is way out the most popular variety due to its heavy and reliable fruiting.

Our trees are all grafted onto rootstocks that grow into half standard trees which have a one-metre clear stem with the crown not too high to enable easy harvesting.
Pruning fruit trees is not as difficult as it seems. Annually pruning out the leader in all apples will again discourage upward growth and produce a wide low crown, perfect for picking and letting plenty of light in. We are always happy to give advice regarding the different types of fruit.
