As the festive season comes around, we often start to appreciate the holly tree for its decorative purposes.
Some of the very best Christmas wreaths are made from holly foliage. Whereas a sprig of holly on a Christmas pudding can make all the difference!
Traditionally, the native holly tree (ilex aquifolium) is the most common tree of choice. However, only female plants produce the iconic red berries, whereas other types of holly are more profuse. Ilex Nellie R. Stevens is a female tree and every plant will be decked out with red berries! It holds green glossy leaves which are less spiky and rather smooth – which has made it very popular recently.
We currently stock three variations of holly tree, our tallest is Ilex Nellie R Stevens which is grown as a standard tree. We have recently stocked a new batch of slightly smaller Ilex aquifolium standard trees, and finally a selection of ilex aquifolium instant hedging trees.
Ilex aquifolium (Common Holly) is a slow growing, medium sized evergreen with dark, glossy, spiky leaves and red berries in the autumn. A medium-sized evergreen tree, with a dense crown, upright when young and rounded cone-shaped when older. The dark green glossy leaves have a wavy margin with sharp spines. Holly is particularly tolerant of partial or full shade. Please note only female plants will produce red berries if a male is close by.
