Fagus sylvatica Purpurea - Purple Beech 1.75/2m tall
Fagus sylvatica Purpurea has beautiful, glossy purple leaves which turn to copper in autumn. Foliage stays brown through winter holding onto leaves until new leaf buds appear, giving all year round screening. Makes a stunning hedge, fast growing and similar to Green Beech in all aspects except colour.
It will thrive in most conditions except very heavy soils with poor drainage . The leaf colour can stay quite dark green in very shady areas with low sunlight.
Purple Beech is very hardy but will not tolerate waterlogged soil or very heavy soils like clay unless there is adequate drainage to allow the water to run off. Once clipped it will become very thick and retains more leaves through the winter the older and denser it becomes.
These plants are grown as feather (branches from low down) plants to be used as hedging units. Planted every 1m to 1.5m they will grow into a solid beautiful hedge.
