Fagus sylvatica - Green Beech Instant Hedging

Fagus sylvatica is a versatile tree grown here in a trough and clipped to create an instant hedge when planted. The dense growth of oval glossy green leaves turns to brown in the autumn but is held nearly all winter long before dropping so gives a good coverage even in the winter months.

These instant hedge units are planted 1x every metre which produces a dense hedge without the need to wait for the plants to grow. Usually supplied at 1.75m tall this is a great way to have a mature hedge instantly. The planters/pots themselves are 80cm long.

Although one of our largest majestic, native trees Fagus sylvatica responds very well to being controlled and cut and is excellent for using as a hedge or screen. The  leaves emerge with silky haired edges and undersides and are pale green at first, turning glossy dark green, then yellow to orange-brown in autumn, with the leaves hanging on in winter. Beech will grow very well in a free draining soil but if you have clay soil it may be worth considering Hornbeam which is more suited to clay. Beech has been awarded the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit)
